We have established Welch Mechanical Designs, LLC to provide high-quality systems customized to meet the specific needs of each client. We strive to create these designs at a lower cost and more efficiently than our competitors.
We specialize in optic and electronic packaging to support the scientific and defense remote-sending communities. We have significant experience in designing and manufacturing rugged optical systems. For each project, our goal is to understand the system as a whole and create the best possible design.
Our unique experiences from working in a research community such as NASA and on high-production volume telecommunication projects make us well prepared to tackle any project.
WMD, LLC integrates many instruments in various manned and unmanned aircraft. To better serve our customers, we offer turnkey services for intergrating instruments into aircraft including design and manufacturing of aircraft interface hardware and FAA DER certification of structural airworthiness.

Our manufacturing capabilities include:
- Optic manufacturing including Single Point Diamond Turning
- Manufacture of traditional polished glass optics including mirrors and lenses with aspheric surfaces
- Milling volumes up to 9 feet (2.7 meters) high x 8 feet (2.4 meters) long x 4 feet (1.2 meters) wide
- Turning of small pieces, less than .39-inch (10-millimeter) diameter, with micron tolerances in small or large quantities
- Milling tolerances down to .0002 inches (5 microns)
- Wire EDM to depths of 12 inches (30 centimeters) in aluminum
- Lathe turning of up to 48 inch (1.2 meter) diameter components
- CNC sheetmetal bending and punches
- Mil-Spec Welding
- Mil-spec coatings including anodize and painting
